LIBERTY! The American Revolution

by Thomas Fleming

The acclaimed PBS series is now available on VHS cassettes packed with dramatic recreations of the pivotal moments of the American Revolution, dramatic narration, and stirring music. Beginning in 1763, in the aftermath of the French and Indian War, and ending with the inauguration of President George Washington in 1789, this extraordinary period in history is vividly depicted. Highlights include such seminal events as the Boston Massacre, the Declaration of Independence, the Battle of Yorktown, and the creation of the Constitution. Along the way, Fleming portrays everyday life in colonial America, the political machinations of the British parliament, the relationships between the Colonists and native Americans, the history of the slave trade, and popular culture of that era. Especially valuable is Fleming's exploration of how the British public reacted to the protracted nature of the Revolutionary War. There are detailed examinations of the major figures (King George III, Washington, Jefferson, Lafayette, etc.) as well as lesser known but colorful figures such as Colonel John Stark, "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoyne, and Banastre Tarleton. Fleming also shows the contributions of women and blacks---both free men and slaves---to the American cause. A great addition to any video library!
